Pentax DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL review
This is still a kit lens, and corners have had to be cut to keep cost down. It shows significant falloff at wideangle, and the performance at 55mm also lags behind the rest of the range. But overall it's a pretty good offering for its class, providing new dSLR owners with some very reasonable optics from the word go. It therefore gains our recommendation

The Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL is a surprisingly good kit zoom although it has its weaknesses specifically at 18mm. The center and border performance is fine here but the extreme corners are somewhat soft.

Pentax 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II SMC DA
I got mine for $90.00 so to me it was a decent price and a decent upgrade. In the end I find the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II a good buy. It is small, light and is nice to walk around.

Pentax SMC DA 18-55mm II f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF)
If you tend to shoot most of you images with the lens stopped down, or at 18mm, then this optic is capable of delivering very good results. If however you tend to shoot at longer focal lengths and at brighter apertures, then it may be worth looking for an upgrade to make the most of your camera.
