Tutorial: Convert a real photograph into comic book photograph
In this tutorial I am going to show you how to convert a real photograph into a comic book photograph in just 5 simple steps.
Step 1: open any picture in Photoshop you feel right for this effect.

Step 2: Duplicate copy of the Background by Selecting the Duplicate Layer Option from the Layer Menu. We do this just in case any mistake is done then we do not end up ruining the original Image.

Step 3: Now Increase the brightness of the photograph by select the option Shadow/Highlight from the image menu as shown in the screenshot below.

In the Shadow/Highlight Dialog box take the shadow slider to 100% to fully brighten up the image.

Step 4: Go to the Filter menu and select the Find Edges menu, this option will convert the Photograph into an image given below.

Step 5: Using the Fade Find Edges option in the Edit menu we will get the desired effect.

In the Fade Find Edges Dialog box change the Mode Menu to Luminosity from Normal and move the Opacity Slider till you get the desired effect.

The Final Image is given below.

or if you use Linux (aka ubuntu for most of you) and the oh so much more difficult Gimp…
Step 1. Open the file
Step 2. Select Filters->Artistic->Cartoon
Step 3. I suggest 35 for “mask radius” and .2 for “% black”
Step 4. eat some chinese food, hey why not, I couldn’t think of anything else for this step
step 5. pat yourself on the back, maybe download some porn and pat somewhere else, hell you’ve got 2 extra steps…up/down…ehhh??? ehhh????

Is there a way to do this using GIMP? I have been trying to follow the steps and translate, but I can’t figure out the last step.

The final image looks a little bit lighter than the original, but that is the only difference I can see.

What a really cool tutorial, thank you so much! The Mode Menu to Luminosity change seems to make a big difference.

I followed your instructions and just have a couple of suggestions:
1. instead of duplicating the layer to prevent ‘ruining’ the original image, just duplicate the file.
2. I’m unsure if you can directly edit the image right after opening it; in the layer palette there’s a locked lock icon, indicating the layer is locked. I habitually duplicate the layer (right-click on the layer in layer palette and select ‘duplicate’ and then drag the original, locked layer to the trash can icon at the bottom of the layer palette)
3. the end result is still far to crisp and defined to really look like a comic book frame, and doesn’t look at all like a comic book frame, instead it looks more like a watercolor painting.
Perhaps you should change the title of this tutorial to ‘convert a real photograph into a watercolor painting’.

This is a very simple way of cartoonization (there are far more complex ways with higher quality results) but to make it pop a little bit, you can simply take a 1-3px black brush and outline everything for effect (especially human faces/hair/features) after you finish everything else above.
