This lightweight compact lens is fantastic. I always have it on one of my cameras because it's great for indoor photography when the light isn't great and for getting some great effects with depth of field inside or out. Having a fixed focal length is a bonus too because you have to move about to get the shot you want rather than standing still and relying on your zoom. I always thought the 'best thing in little packages' saying was a myth (apply to it anything else such as chocolate and it's very wrong). But in this case it's true...

The 50mm f/1.8 lens is Canon's smallest, lightest and cheapest lens, and is great value for money, as it allows you to get into low-light photography very cheaply. The very short depth-of-field of the f/1.8 aperture is a lot of fun, and can be used in various creative ways.
The f/1.4 and f/1.2 versions of Canon's 50mm lens are significantly more expensive than the f/1.8, and I recommend that anyone who doesn't have a 50mm lens invest in the very cheap f/1.8 version - you can always upgrade to an f/1.4 or f/1.2 later if desired.

This lens is an all-around great lens! I bought my Canon XSi with the kit lens as well as this 50 mm lens and I have not taken the 50 mm lens off of my camera. It is so sharp and so affordable!
